Credit where credit is due

If you campaign on environmental or social justice issues, being against stuff tends to be the easy part. Most people, when push comes to shove, tend to be against destroying greenbelt land or sending kids up chimneys.
The more challenging bit, that in my view separates the campaigners from the reactionaries, is championing change that brings about a beneficial effect. Personally, I’d include both regulation to deliver a decent quality of life and building a renewable energy infrastructure in that category.
In the past I have criticised Councillor Joe Abbott and his fellow Lib Dems for opposing renewable energy generation, while supporting road building and airport expansion. But credit where credit’s due, Joe appears to have had a rethink on renewable energy and I congratulate him on that. The truth is if we are going to leave an environment fit for future generations to thrive in we need to start delivering renewable energy schemes now, and plenty of them.
Sadly the South Tyneside Indy Alliance Party has chosen to throw in their lot with the reactionary anti-environmental camp - Again.

You live next to a shipyard and you're surprised to see big lumps of metal towering overhead??

What next, Heathrow residents complain of noisy skies?
